On his journey to Paris, D’Artacan is insulted by a man with a black moustache, who then gallops off. They meet again at the hotel where D’Artacan stays the night and start to fight a duel, but the man breaks off to talk to the beautiful Milady, leaving D’Artacan to be beaten up by his servant and the hotel-keeper. The man, subsequently, returns to rob D’Artacan of his letter of introduction.
