In his home village near Tarbes, the young D’Artacan dreams of being an expert swordsman and a member of the famous Muskehounds. A gentleman from Paris calls on his father, as a result of which D’Artacan is sent to Paris with only a sword, an old horse and a letter of introduction to the Captain of the Muskehounds, M. De Treville.
